If you want to automate your trading in India, you usually end up looking at two very different doors. One leads to a playground for creators. You may attain a well-chosen setting with the second option. While both options will allow you to automate, the path, cost, and effort involved are very different.
The Zerodha Route: Code or Pay Up
Zerodha is the biggest player in the broking space in India. There are two ways to go about automating your orders. Either you can write your own code and use their API (Kite Connect). Or use third-party platforms such as Stratzy or Streak.
There is no plug-and-play option for the API. Their Kite Connect has a free Personal plan for you to place orders and manage your portfolio. It does NOT provide you with access to real-time data or historical candles. If you want access to the whole lot, i.e., WebSocket and historical data, you will have to pay for the Connect plan. This is priced at ₹500 per month per API key. Suppose you add the historical and quote data add-on, that jumps to ₹2,000 per month. Third-party platforms are another subscription layer on top of this, with most charging monthly fees for strategy deployment.
This is great for someone who knows what they’re doing. If you’re a coder and/or quant wanting total control, then Kite Connect is a great tool. But if you are a discretionary trader looking for a shortcut, it is a steep climb.
The Other Side: No Code, No Subscription
The alternative is a platform that hands you the strategies pre-built. HDFC Sky, through its partnership with AlgoBulls, offers 16 ready-to-use models. Six trade equity, and ten trade derivatives. The logic is disclosed. You review the rules, check the backtested drawdown, and activate. There is no coding, no API keys, and no separate subscription fee above your normal brokerage.
However, if you’re looking to automate your trades without getting into development, this can be an entirely different offering. You aren’t paying for infrastructure. You’re paying for execution and ease of use. However, there is a loss of flexibility. You won’t be able to modify the source code. Instead, you’re picking from a selection of options.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong in F&O
Cost differences become especially sharp when you trade the future and options segment. When dealing with derivatives, you need to have some margin, so having a reliable system is important. If your server goes down when using a custom bot with an API, you’re out of luck. The support burden falls on you.
With a curated platform, the execution pipeline is managed by the broker and their technology partner. You’ll simply create a ticket. You’re not going to be trying to debug a script at 9:15 am while losing money in a position. This is often more valuable for active F&O traders.
The Real Question: Who Is Doing the Work?
It all depends on your preference for where you want to invest. Zerodha’s model asks you to invest time in development or money in third-party subscriptions to get a working system. That is a fair deal for the technically inclined, and it is a proven path. The free algo trading software provided by other platforms involves hidden costs.
HDFC Sky requires you to spend time going through your strategies. You spend twenty minutes reading the logic of a white box model, check the risk parameters, and deploy. The cost is baked into the brokerage. There is no separate software bill.
Both options aren’t bad; however, if you want to get started quickly this week with zero coding, then the curated ecosystem is the way to go. If you want a unique edge to your trading, then you’ll need to use the API.
Make a choice as to what kind of trader you are.
